7 Reasons Why You Must Ride Face of America Gettysburg
Over 500 adaptive and able-bodied athletes from across the world will join World T.E.A.M.’s Face of America cycling challenge to Gettysburg’s historic Civil War battlefields this April 19-21, 2024. Face of America recognizes and honors adaptive military veterans who have provided so much in their support of their country.
One of America’s premier inclusive cycling programs, Face of America begins in Arlington, Virginia and heads north through Frederick, Maryland to Gettysburg. Adaptive athletes from all service branches pedal bicycles, recumbent bikes and hand cycles in this journey. These adaptive athletes live with paralysis, loss of limb, Post Traumatic Stress, blindness, and Traumatic Brain Injury from accidents, attacks in wars and conflicts, and illness.
Retired military and civilian able-bodied athletes also participate as valued members of the program. These athletes ride in support and honor of their adaptive colleagues.
Although many athletes return year after year, a significant number are participating in their first journey through rural Maryland. For those who have never pedaled north as a member of Face of America, or haven’t ridden in several years, here are seven top reasons why registering to join the team is worthwhile.
1 – Honor America’s Finest
Each Face of America welcomes adaptive military veterans who gave so much in their service to their nation. It’s not a parade, but an opportunity to meet these exceptional individuals and show them how much you appreciate their dedication and sacrifice. Athletes from young to old, veterans and civilians, come from across America with interesting backgrounds and life experiences. Share your own story, listen to others, engage and make friends for life.
2 – Be Fit
Cycling is fun and it is addictive. Pedaling outside among nature and experiencing the countryside is a great way to build on your personal physical and mental fitness. Cycling is the gift that keeps on giving; providing health, adventure, and commuting benefits.
3 – Historic Virginia
Face of America begins with a route through General Robert E. Lee’s former estate. Cycling past the Pentagon, through Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall into Arlington National Cemetery, with its iconic United States Marine Corps War Memorial, you’ll appreciate the national significance of this estate and its meaning to America.
4 – Full Support
Having mechanical difficulties or a flat tire is no big deal at Face of America. One of our helpful marshals will help you change a flat, or if needed, hop into a sag van and ride to the next rest stop. There, a trained mechanic can undertake the necessary repairs for your bike.
5 – Take a Break
Face of America schedules rest stops every ten to 12 miles both days. Quick energy food, water, and comfort stations help you enjoy the ride. And, at a leisurely pace along the route, you’ll never be left alone from start to finish!
6 – Saturday Celebration
Saturday’s finish in Frederick, Maryland is hosted at the Frederick Fairgrounds. Adult athletes can grab a brew and refill from local food trucks, while enjoying the afternoon with friends and colleagues.
7 – Spectacular Conclusion
Go ahead – we dare you to not be emotional as you pedal along the hallowed grounds in Gettysburg. Riding the final miles through the Gettysburg National Military Park is a privilege, particularly alongside adaptive military veterans. You’ll finish at the World War II American Experience museum, ready to relax and enjoy your accomplishment.
